The source for survival for most early settlements in the Mojave was the Colorado River which spans for over 1000 miles. Visiting the river almost compares to an oasis a place where flowers grow.....and a very crystal clear blue river flows. The water that flows through the El Dorado Hills near the semi ghost town of Nelson was once used for drinking and irrigation of crops.

Along this river the Anasazi were quite abundant however when they disapeared or left the area the Southern Paiute were the dominant tribe. When the natives began being forced out by white settlers they traveled on large ferry boats on this river. Not all of the Colorado River is full of white rapids some areas rather are very calm.

My first time I actually seen the Colorado River was when I crossed Hoover Dam as two key areas the river flows to one being Lake Mead the other Lake Mojave. Strangely just below Lake Mead the river begins again then miles later you hit another lake called Mojave. In between these two lakes is the El Dorado Hills a place not only where the wild west started but a place that relied on the river.

The Hoover Dam was built in the later 1920s just miles upstream. The project was a 24 hour one with enough concrete to build a sidewalk from the North and South poles. Many men died some washed up down the river while others drowned in this special oasis that I take our viewers on.

You have to understand that although we visited Click Here: El Dorado Canyon and Click Here: Nelson Nevada we wanted to give our viewers an entirely different aspect of the region. We wanted to do a day excursion which would show you a very scenic hike as we worked our way into town...then eventually to the river all the way down to its bank meandering along its cliffs.....to the El Dorado Canyon which sits perpendicular with the Colorado River. We thought it was a great exploration in the sense that the area is beautiful but also very mysterious.

You see their are various parts parts that lay within these hills you have your mining camp, mining district, residential areas, Nelson Landing which is the port and then the canyon which has many flood channels. Years ago in 1974 a great flood occurred at that time some of the town of Nelson surrounded the landing. The landing was 5 miles westward in El Dorado Canyon hence the photos we took from its cliffs and at the bottom of it. When it down poured in the hills surrounding the area the water ran down into the channels creating a flash flood. In this area are 5 channels that run from these mountains/hills. Those run offs connect into a small outlet where Nelson's landing was. The entire landing and village were destroyed in minutes as 9 people died when the roaring waters came through the wash. It was reported the wall of debris and water came with a 50 foot wave as it poured out into the river. I heard when the flood occurred people eating at the restaurant died with not even a chance to escape. Due to this reason allot of the Las Vegas locals are fairly spooked about visiting this location.

The town of Nelson seems to have many artifacts collected within these hills from the mines and river banks. They offer canoeing here and allot of extreme type of sports. Personally myself I enjoy the rich history of the area despite the rumors of it being cursed. I have always felt like this area had a decent amount of strangeness all the way from floods...to strange shoot outs....to murders....to accidental deaths. But I keep coming back this time bringing our viewers an adventure into those same areas that once were within the flood zone along with other jewels surrounding the area.

If you were to to tour the river you would see rings in some of the rock near some of the more higher current areas of the river. This is due to the fact that steam boats would have issues trying to travel in the current so the rings provided some stability. When mining was a big industry in Nelson the gold and other minerals could be loaded from oxcarts onto the boats to be distributed to other locations.

In the early 1900s Nelsons landing was one of the largest ports on the River and in the 1920s it almost was a necessity for the locals. The first reason was the prohibition came into play in 1920. In AZ it was enforced and moonshine was selling for 50 dollars a gallon. However on the Nelson side which was considered NV it sold for as little as 1 dollar a gallon. Many bootleggers came to the area to do trade. The second reason was the Hoover dam with the notion that many of the dam workers could live at port and could take the ferry upstream to help build it. After it was built it became a resort with cabins so fisherman in their boats could take people on tours to see it and do some fishing.

Not only is the area rumored to be haunted but within these hills are ghost of indians, early pioneers and miners. One of the most famous stories is about ghost hounds which roam these hills. Back in the day the miners left their dogs on chains perhaps some were abused. But the dogs were left to guard various shafts outside of the mines some of them were not treated right and they died while some were set free into the wild. The hills have eyes and this area of the river dates back to ancient times.

When you look at the photos of the river understand that at one time centuries ago the river was much wider and water levels topped off where the cliffs begin. Climbing down to the river is a journey with fields of butter cups...sand....rocks....descending along cliffs till you reach a soft prestine shore. Once at the river bed one can look up and see where the water once carved these ancient rocks. It truly is an amazing place nowhere like it in the world and I share it with you the viewers....my friends!

In this update your going to see what my life is like in the world of exploration. One might find it morbid to have a picnic at the same location that so many were led to a watery death but despite this occurrence we want to show you the beauty in all things life and death. Their is so much life to the Nelson area only this time instead of us visiting a famous mine we focused on the hills and river. We hope that others can enjoy the beauty that comes with the rumored cursed river banks of the Colorado River!
