Colby Lake Ruins & Woods

We went back to the car to grab more equipment it was pretty late there were no cars or anybody out. We walked up a dirt road which was so dark we could barely even see the moon was not even out so it was DARK.. We passed a house out in the woods and the dog started barking at us ferociously  of course that is its job to perhaps watch over the house so we walked hastefully past the house and things quieted down. 

We came out to a clearing which is Colby Park and the giant lake. There was nobody back here and it was real peaceful at first. We walked up to the trailhead where they have a map of the trails and sites. We spent a long time reading the material posted on the trailhead and Lee was changing out his batteries. We had our backs facing towards the wide open park I felt so uneasy like something was just watching us out of curiosity.

But there were no noises or anything at the time out of the ordinary. I was just reading up on the map some historical paragraphs on each place in the woods I visited previously when were here in a larger group. This time it was only Lee and I so I knew once we entered these woods the activity would increase but not just that but this thing creature I talked about previously might also catch notice of us.

So we got everything read and walked about 15 feet into the woods and right away we heard something. What we heard sounded like a pretty big creature its like it was a call of some kind or a warning. Maybe it was trying to scare us out of the woods or maybe it was signaling others in the area but what it sounded like to me is a giant reptile or bird in the woods. 

Lee said he could not identify the sound this creature made so right away we knew what we were dealing with was probably not an animal and it had some intelligence as we entered the trail that is when it made this very loud sound. I wish we had the recorder on because the sound it made probably would have made most people run the other direction. Lee and I pushed on and got a couple hundred feet down the trail that is when the trouble began.

Something along the lake which ran parallel to the trail was following us. The woods it was trudging through between the trail and lake were only 50 feet at most so this creature was very close and we heard it again. But the strange thing was is that it stayed behind us and it was making itself obvious as it was not even trying to move slow or quiet. Even as the trail twisted and turned it still pursued us.

We kept on and I found the carriage house or garage. I wanted to show Lee the log cabin and where they once stored the carriages many years ago. I had to change my film so we sat in the carriage house for awhile and it felt safer then being out on the trail at the time. It seemed the creature also lost us temporarily but we heard it moving around out there but it was far away. But it was big whatever it was because a branch snapped very loudly. 

We entered the cabin and I showed Lee what I thought were bite and claw marks in the wood but he examined it further and said it was termites. Nonetheless its strange considering it was only in this one area.

We eventually got back onto the trail and the one thing that stood out is that the first time we were on it the trail was only about three feet wide with many trees blocking many paths as well as heavy brush. But the giant tread marks on the trail indicated that the town has been widening the trail and removing all the trees. As in this one area there was hundreds of chopped up logs stacked. 

We no longer heard the creature for a little bit so we moved on. There is this big area with a clearing and many citrus trees. I wanted to show Lee the ruins which are very well hidden if you do not know what to look for and sure enough we came around a bend which the stone stairwell was visible.

See in the middle of this clearing is a hundred foot patch of foliage, trees, and jungle like setting. It kind of is secluded but at the same time once you enter in there your like sitting ducks. So I was not exactly comfortable with going back in here knowing how close this creature was in the woods.

But we entered and as we walked deeper in there was a pit possibly where a tree was removed but it was pretty deep almost 5 feet give or take. Then I showed Lee some fireplace ruins and we both heard it that thing whatever it is was on the move the problem was is it was moving towards us closer and closer not away. 

We heard it making an odd noise then some movement up above us as if this thing was able to fly or leap around. Although the branches and movement were minor I hustled because I wanted Lee to take some photos of me standing on the Fireplace ruins. I noticed hearing movement all around us like whatever this predator was it was circling the ruins we were standing in and this time it was close real close. I said to Lee I don't mind the movement or small branches breaking as long as it stays where its at then behind me a big crash we heard something entered the perimeter.

We quickly both grabbed our swords and held them in front of us not moving or talking. All of sudden right in front of us we heard it snapping branches, making odd noises, and whatever it was it had to be huge because I could heard it hitting the ground as it walked like it had maybe hooves or something. We stood still keep in mind here we are in the Cassadaga woods in the middle of a clearing or Citrus grove like sitting ducks in a small patch of brush. It ambushed us.

As we held out our swords the creature was less then 25 feet away in front of us still closing in like it was ready to attack. Honestly if I ever felt threatened with my life on an investigation this would be it because this thing was watching us we could not see it and it was moving towards us despite us standing a trance with swords.

Then all of sudden it stopped in front of it made a very weak sound but we stood our ground just waiting for it to jump out at us. I seen something move to our left like I said this patch of jungle like fauna we were in its hard to see anything and I caught a glimpse of something almost my height move to the left it was fast. It seems that by us not running and standing our ground the creature seen us as a worthy opponent not worth challenging.

The creature starting moving away but still to this day there is not any known animal that would just stop dead in its tracks let alone come towards two men get in front of them stop and then slowly walk off. So this creature possessed perhaps some intelligence but we did not run therefore it did not give chase.

We started to put together that this area we were in perhaps was its territory and perhaps whatever it was maybe was living in this little area we were in. As I said in our first investigation the group of people I was with heard something to in this area moving around. As the creature pulled away I showed lee a little shed or house of some kind near the ruins and the deep hole that was dug out by something. The hole looked as if it was done by some animal just as I said on my first investigation. We could not find prints but this would be the perfect hiding place. Even near these ruins we found a well which was pretty deep even something could hide down in there. I did not see the well the first time because of all the foliage this time it was visible.

We headed out of the patch of woods and back onto the trail along the lake. The creature was being very quiet I knew it was watching the adrenaline was just going. But the trail felt safer and soon we hiked pretty far up the trail. We passed the Colby Oak, The Bamboo Tree eventually to an unmarked trail which led us to a creek. At this point my spotlight was running low and things were starting to get very dark back in these woods.

We wanted to find if there were any remains of an old hotel along the trail. We over looked it and ended up pretty far down the trail behind some houses so we turned back and eventually found the loop where the hotel once stood. The trail in some areas was very thin and we had to duck down from trees and foliage surrounding us. 

I again heard the creature it was close it seemed that this thing followed us all the way out there. It was not as noisy but we hard it briefly. We passed a few markers which signify structures or areas that hikers can enjoy during the day here sightseeing. We figured the hotel ruins were near by but the brush was so thick it would take a daytime trip to find them possibly.

We headed back out and eventually came back near the Colby Ruins where his house once stood and that small patch of woods where the creature surrounded us. We started to head down the rail and near the citrus grove we hard it. Lee mentioned that it sounded as if it was carefully moving slow and trying to be quiet. He almost mentioned that it sounded as if it took four steps on its hind legs and two steps with its front legs. The only Cryptid I know like this is either the Chupacabras or Bigfoot of course I am sure there are others.

We almost were out of the woods though but it followed us all the way out and finally we enter the lake view and park again. It felt so good to be out of them woods and we took a break and Lee heard off in the woods the creature as if it was communicating like a call. Maybe there was more then one maybe it was sending off some kind of communicating telling the others were not in the woods or we got away.

The thing is that I heard alot of strange things take place in those woods is it possible that someone maybe opened a portal back here and let something in?  We may not know but perhaps that is why nobody will go into these woods at night.  There are so many theories as to what we encountered last night here. Even a half of mile off in the distance and across from the lake you could hear residences that had dogs barking like crazy some even howling. The dogs sensed whatever was out there last night most definitely. 

Whatever this is was intelligent was communicating perhaps with others and who knows it could; have been a predator maybe it was trying to ambush us or maybe it was just curious. We then headed down the dark road out of the park and woods area to the car. Although I stated this on our prologue page about this place awhile back ago two rottweilers near these woods turned up mutilated and the creature that did it took giant chunks or bite marks out of the dogs. The animal warden said the bite marks do not match any known animal in those woods and they are bigger then bear bites. So it is factual that something in those woods remains unknown and I believe me and Lee played cat and mouse with it in those woods very very close call. It also seemed like the ghost in the woods on a psychic level were warning us I could just tell by how they were acting with me they were worried about us. The next place we journeyed off to was Suber Memorial Gardens.
