By the 1870's the Chinese population had boomed to over 1500 residents which came to represent about 10 percent of the regions population. Even though their were some Chinese Miners most were not permitted to work in them due to superstition and bad luck so generally you would see them working the mills but never in the depths of the Comstock Lode. More or less the Chinese contributed in other ways such as food service, bartending, servants, laundrymen, woodcutters and general laborers. Which also helped shape the town to what it is today as the Miners Unions prohibited them from working underground unlike other immigrants who came to strike it rich.

The Chinese had their own segregated section in the Northeast part of town where Opium Dens, Kidnappings, Gambling and Prostitution were a way of life. Some Chinese men would allure younger white women to these dens to get them hooked on opium only to take advantage of them. However for the most part the Chinese were hardworking people that brought life to this boomtown despite all the sinful things that went on throughout the town was really not any different.

Some of the Chinese worked on the Central Pacific portion of the transcontinental railroad within the great basin in 1868. Most of the men would leave their homes in Virginia City while the women stayed home or worked in the food industry for a living. Allot of the Chinese came from California which today has one of the highest populations of Asians in the United States.When Virginia City NV began to die the Chinese left behind what is called slums or poor mans houses.

Most of the living quarters or slums rather were one to two bedroom houses their were no fancy brick homes these were all made of wood. The Chinese had their own markets, food stands and stables. However due to their weak infrastructure most of the living quarters would burn down in 1875 thus leaving very little behind. These structures that you see below is about all that remains of them. Although their have been attempts to restore and modernize them all attempts have failed. This is why we must protect what is left of these living quarters which are generally all connected to one another including its barn where the Chinese raised livestock in for poultry. They are all what remains everything else was lost in the fire leaving many homeless or fleeing back to California.

Today the grounds of the slums are overgrown and remnants of the past are scattered about such as handcarts, hearse, wagons, safe and piles of wood. The inside of the slums is even more deplorable as water pours in from the roof, glass is everywhere and holes are found around every turn. Despite its condition the spirits of the Chinese haunt what is left of the living quarters as we have deemed the property to be very haunted based on our journeys within the Comstock Lode. Some of them lived there days out in Virginia City only to be permanent residents not only of its vast Cemetery which has a Chinese section but these homes that provided them with a means to live when Virginia City was a bustling boomtown and history was in the making.
