The Cassadaga & Lake Helen Cemetery draws attention from ghost busters all over the state. But this is not why I chose to investigate it. The cemetery contains stones dating back to the late 1800s the oldest from my research is a 7 year old boy named George E. Thatcher which was buried in 1872 around the same time the Cassadaga spiritualist community was found.

The cemetery is very hilly and despite the fact it is a little over 100 years old the condition of it looks like its much older. Unfortunately over the years this has been a hot spot for desecrations. Many go up there to stone tip and drink and as you walk around the evidence is there as almost half of the stones are broke. Even some of the trees are dead like the one that has just a trunk with no limbs its pretty eerie looking. There are many strange and a variety of enclosures which mark off the family plots.

Many spiritualist in the area will tell you that there is no Cemetery in Cassadaga do not let them fool you the cemetery sits on the border of Lake Helen & Cassadaga. Although I will not give directions to prevent further vandalism it is a 5 minute walk from downtown Cassadaga. I believe the reason it was established is so that the spiritualist and pagan people would have a place of burial since almost every burial here contains residents of either Lake Helen or Cassadaga.

What is even more interesting is that the founder of Camp Cassadaga named George Colby is buried here. We will talk about him more if you visit Colby Lake & Park as well as Colby Temple. But imagine that you investigate a cemetery in a town where the founder of it is buried. So perhaps what we are trying to do is show you the various connections to the town and the cemetery here. George Colby found Camp Cassadaga in the later 1800s he was a medium from Iowa.

Many have wrote me numerous times and told me they have reported strange shadows moving around as well as others experience orb activity. I have talked to some who have even seen ghost here. I know one of our investigators did. I mean it is what it is the cemetery sits in a wooded area and it down right belongs in a horror film. My friend use to park his car in the cemetery and he is the one who took me there during the day so I could have a further look. Even more saddening is the fact two giant trees fell down in the cemetery one of them damaging some stones.

Some say the cemetery is a place of energy and maybe it is after all many of these people buried here were Spiritualist, Pagans, Wiccans etc they were people who understand the afterlife. There are quite a few people I have talked to that have visited dozens of times perhaps this is the Goodleburg of Florida in some aspects. I mean after all most of the people buried here were heavily into the supernatural, demonology, Magick, psychic work etc.

Even a more interesting fact is an urban legend called the Devil's Chair which is said to exist in this cemetery. Every year around Halloween those that are daring enough sit on it in hopes to speak to the dark prince himself. There is also a rumor that on Halloween if you sit on the chair at Midnight it will hold you from one minute. I learned this is true when my friend Melissa told me that she sat on it years ago and the chair would not release her she told me it was the most terrifying experience. Some say that the chair was put there after a younger person was killed in that area and buried so it sort of like a curse. From what I understand all it is from what I am told is a broken stone bench. There are other rumors to that if you leave a can of beer as an offering to the devil over night that in the morning the can of beer will empty as if someone drank it.

Over the years because of this chair it has led to Dark practices, Satanism, Witchcraft, and a lot of underage drinking. Now each year a tour is offered around Halloween to prevent this from happening. Since the 1980s the chair has been the biggest attraction to those that's dared to enter the cemetery and sit on it. Even the cops often would go up there and sit on it some say they are the ones drinking the beers haha but with all good humor said aside today the devils chair is gone. What happened to this cursed chair? Was it nothing but a myth? We may never know the real truth to the story but what remains is those that have lived over the years to experience it themselves.

Update:

A anonymous person wrote me about the cemetery and told me the chair is still in the cemetery. Although everybody has there own versions of this particularly people who never even been here. But anyhow he told me that it was built by the family of a elderly man so that he could sit next to his high school sweetheart who was buried there. Then he said that the cemetery is not haunted accept by police but what he failed to explain is the fact that one of my investigators did see an apparition here among hundreds who have visited over the years. Some deny often the paranormal out of fear rather then try and learn about it.
