Barely overnight in the year of 1862 the boom town of Austin Nevada was born. By 1865 there was over 10 thousand residents many of them miner families or pioneers who came to the town to seek a life. With its sister town of Clifton Nevada just below this graveyard between both communities a cemetery would be needed for those that passed away. Walking around this cemetery tells you a tragic story about how hard life was braving this frontier. There are many young adults to infants buried here who died in accidents or from disease. Some believe that the Austin Cemeteries are some of the finest frontier graveyards in the west however that is a matter of opinion. No less this is one of the finer wild western graveyards in Nevada as many of the graves today are a testament to the hardworking citizens that made Austin possible and may even contain some of the first pioneers of Kingston Nevada another nearby living ghost town.

The Austin Cemeteries is comprised of five different graveyards as on the north side of the Loneliest Road in America is the Masonic and IOOF sections. There are wrought iron signs pointing to each cemetery however from my observation it would appear after space was becoming less available the two fraternal organizations began to bury there loved ones wherever they could find room. It is not uncommon to see a Mason buried in the IOOF section just as an IOOF member to be buried in the Masonic section likewise. The Masons were skilled laborers and craftsmen keep this in mind as you see many photos of various gravestones they engraved for many of the interments found here.

On the south side of Highway 50 The Loneliest Road in America are three more cemeteries. The first section or cemetery rather is called Calvary which has a wrought iron sign hanging over its gate and contains many of the Catholic faith. This cemetery is the largest and contains some of the most prominent pioneers that lived in Austin Nevada. Many of the graves are made of marble or are large monuments while some are beautiful statues such with one of its more notable angel statues which is overshadowed by Stokes Castle in the distance. I do have to say this is one of the finest pioneer Catholic cemeteries I been to in my years of journeying out west. The engravings, epitaphs and intricate work put into the gravestones are quite amazing if you take the time to check them out.

If you were to head west from Calvary you will eventually come across the American Indian and Citizens Cemeteries/Sections. The problem is that both sections kind of blend together while there are some folks buried between the graves that derive from the Calvary section. It is much easier to separate the IOOF, Masonic and Calvary sections then it is to try doing so with the other two. I have done extensive research and found that others are having the same problem. This is due to the fact that many genealogy sites have only done minimal work while some interments are not even listed period!

When you look at the Native American and Citizens sections keep in mind these are only estimations of where the other two burial grounds are at. While a few have stated that there are many potters graves which generally are unmarked burials I have to concur. Near the Native American section which houses about 70 plus graves there are some areas that are wide open with no graves for over 50' so its quite plausible that many of the interments who were buried in the Citizens section are lost to history unfortunately. I read due to owner issues that genealogy research of the Citizen's and Native American sections have not really been extensively done. Most of the native interments were members of the Shoshone tribe who have also left their ancient roots nearby at the Toquima Cave. Although none of those interments are ancient they do represent there presence in the region and some of them may have resided here prior to the white man settling this boom town.

The cemetery resides on a hill at over 6k at the lower end of Pony Canyon just a few hundred feet from where the first gold and silver was discovered here. Sadly the cemetery is reaching a degree of disrepair and deterioration. Many of the enclosures made of wrought iron are bent, collapsing or missing gates. Their are at least 120 of them along with about 20 wood paling enclosures. Within most of those wood enclosures are wood grave markers as well which are not doing very well. The wood surrounding the graves and markers are rotting, split, broke or laying on the ground. Many of the permanent residents of the cemetery were Irish Catholic. Although Austin Nevada was diverse in culture its perish was very large which attracted many of the Catholic faith.

The cemetery was erected in 1863 at least that is when the first burial took place. The cemetery had fencing that was built around it in the 1860's which probably today no longer existed. From what I know back in the day when cemeteries were erected they often built a white picket or ornamental wrought iron fence around it. Today the cemetery is surrounded by chain link fencing and if you want my opinion I think more needs to be done. For such a fine historical cemetery you would think that it would be better preserved but with collapsed wood closures, broken in half stones and a beat up chain link fence it really is taking away from this graveyards beauty despite the dramatic views of the Reese River Valley.

I found some other oddities here as well such as many of the deaths occurred in the month of May. Now its possible that epidemics broke out and this may have been an attributing factor. I do know that there was a Diphtheria Epidemic that once broke out killing many of the children in the 1900's. Other outbreaks may have been Cholera, Spanish Flu and Yellow Fever which had taken a toll on the families of Austin Nevada. It would not be uncommon to visit the cemetery a few times a week to see fresh graves of children dug. For awhile one funeral after another was taking place sadly the good died young. Its amazing how something so simple could be cured in today's times but back in the day medicine was not quite there yet and with that in mind being a pioneer in Austin came with risk.

I heard the cemetery is haunted I only captured a couple small time EVP's and some of them I could barely hear because the winds tend to whip across this burial ground that blow across the Reese River Valley expanse. If you visit Austin Nevada you cannot visit this graveyard as the two really go hand in hand. Without these pioneers there would be no Austin therefore please take the time to visit these granite and marble wonders. I found a member of the Hess family here the Hess's for many years since the 1800's operated one of the first ranches in the region. We did an exploration and investigation of the Hess Ranch it is another fine example of this areas early history and the struggles these pioneers coped with. The wife of the original owner has extensive family including her baby all buried at this very cemetery which overlooks the Reese River Valley which today is home to quite a few historic ranches.

Sometimes when I add cases on our site we do not always get ghosts but were realistic in our research and work. We will show you everything we can and hopefully teach others how important preservation is. I take the time to show off my work because it is here for others to learn. These were human beings who once made the wild west what it is today. You had to be brave to journey via wagon in the middle of Nevada where the summers were over 100 degrees and the winters were brutal as you were buried by snow in a little cabin. These people that once lived and are now are found in this cemetery are a part of western American history located near one of the finest ghost towns in the silver state. This is a true Wild Western cemetery that resides in the Nevadan frontier on the Loneliest Road In America. It does not nor will it get better then this so savor it for what it is because some day it may be gone we hope not but it is all up to all of us to do our part!
